Established in 1982, Tonsan Books specializes in the sale of academic books related to the humanities and social sciences, mainly literature, history, philosophy, cultural studies.
As the 1970s represented a turbulent era of change in Taiwan, the independent bookstore, which was set up by young intellectuals passionate about intellectual and social theory, was mainly focused on the publication of left-wing socialist books (for example, Mr. Lu Xun ), such as publications written in Simplified Chinese from China and Hong Kong; "Taiwan Social Studies Quarterly" and various academic research papers. Other subject matter included Weber, Leftist Marx, the New Left, postmodernism, Foucault, feminism, gender research, and nativist research. Hence, it was once a distribution center for banned books.
In addition, there are also many student works which could not be mass-produced, including text and video works, which is another one of the bookstore’s main attractions.
